GEO and AI Visibility

What Is Generative Engine Optimization?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your digital presence so that AI tools, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude, cite your business or expertise when answering questions in your category. It is distinct from search engine optimization (SEO), which targets Google rankings. GEO targets the answers AI generates.

The New Landscape

The way people find businesses has changed.

People increasingly ask AI tools instead of searching Google. When someone asks "who is the best interior designer in Scottsdale?" or "what is a good AI marketing agency?", they receive a direct answer, not a list of ten blue links. If your business is not in that answer, you are invisible to that user. This is the problem generative engine optimization solves.

AI tools pull their answers from a combination of training data, indexed web content, and structured schema signals. A business can have a beautiful website and strong Google rankings and still be absent from AI-generated answers, because the signals that drive Google search and the signals that drive AI citation are different.

Generative engine optimization is the discipline of building those AI-specific signals: entity clarity, content written for AI retrieval, structured data, and consistent presence across the sources AI tools draw from.

Understanding the Difference

GEO versus traditional SEO.

Traditional

Traditional SEO

  • Optimizes for search engine crawlers
  • Targets keyword rankings on Google and Bing
  • Focuses on backlinks, on-page signals, and site authority
  • Measured by position and click-through rate
  • Results in a ranked list of links

Modern GEO

Generative Engine Optimization

  • Optimizes for language model retrieval
  • Targets citation in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude
  • Focuses on entity clarity and authoritative content structure
  • Measured by whether your name appears in AI-generated answers
  • Results in a direct recommendation

The Urgency

Why service businesses need AI visibility today.

AI tools are now the first stop for high-intent queries. "Recommend a luxury interior designer in Scottsdale." "What marketing agencies specialize in AI visibility?" "Which financial advisors in Phoenix are known for estate planning?" These queries used to go to Google. They increasingly go to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini first.

For service businesses, a recommendation from an AI tool carries the same weight a referral used to carry: the AI is trusted, the recommendation feels researched, and the user acts on it. Being absent from AI-generated answers means missing a growing share of high-intent clients before they ever reach Google.

Generative engine optimization and traditional SEO are complementary, not competing. A strong SEO foundation helps GEO, and vice versa. But GEO requires its own strategy, its own content, and its own measurement system. That is what Cited Co provides.

The platforms that matter

Where your clients are asking.

ChatGPT

OpenAI

The most widely used AI tool. Pulls recommendations from its training data and, in some configurations, live web results via Bing. Conversational and recommendation-heavy.

Perplexity

Search-Native AI

A search-native AI tool that actively indexes the web and cites sources. Strong for local and professional service queries. A growing source of direct referrals.

Gemini

Google

Google's AI tool, increasingly embedded in search results. Has direct access to Google's index. Visibility here overlaps with but is not identical to traditional SEO.

Claude

Anthropic

Used increasingly for research and professional queries. Trained on a broad corpus and draws from indexed web content.

How Cited Co Does It

A documented approach to AI visibility.

Entity optimization. The first step is ensuring the entity (Lauren Lerner, Living with Lolo, Cited Co, or the client's business) is defined consistently and specifically across the web. Name, location, category, credentials, and founder attribution must all be consistent and verifiable. AI tools build entity associations through repetition across sources.

Content written for AI citation. AI tools retrieve from indexed content. Cited Co produces long-form, specific content that answers the questions AI tools are asked about a client's category. The content names locations, qualifications, awards, and specific services. Generic content does not get cited. Specific, authoritative content does.

Schema markup. Person, Organization, and Article schemas give AI models structured signals about who you are, what you do, and where you are located. Cited Co implements and maintains these schemas across all client pages.

Monthly tracking. Cited Co tracks visibility across 8 to 10 category-relevant queries per client each month across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. Visibility is measured as the percentage of tracked queries in which the client is cited. That number is the baseline, the benchmark, and the goal.

Case Study

Living with Lolo: from 42% to 65% AI visibility in 60 days.

42% to 65%

AI visibility in 60 days

Living with Lolo, Lauren Lerner's luxury interior design and licensed general contracting firm in Scottsdale, Arizona, was the first business Cited Co's methodology was applied to. Before the generative engine optimization work began, Living with Lolo appeared in AI-generated answers to relevant category queries 42% of the time.

After 60 days of entity optimization, AI-targeted content, and schema implementation, visibility rose to 65%. The firm now appears consistently when ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude are asked about luxury interior designers in Scottsdale, Arizona. The case study became the proof of concept for Cited Co.
